FNB Gas on the BMWK’s 2024 system development strategy
The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection published the System Development Strategy (SES 2024) for the first time in November 2024. It serves as a guideline for the further transformation of the economy and society towards climate neutrality and, in accordance with the Energy Industry Act (EnWG), forms the basis for the expansion of energy infrastructures – including the scenario frameworks for electricity, gas and hydrogen.
FNB Gas supports the objective formulated in the SES 2024 to better coordinate individual planning processes and comprehensively drive forward the transformation in Germany. The strategy is an important step towards integrated energy infrastructure planning. A successful transformation of the energy system requires a cross-sector strategy that takes into account the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy and the further development of the gas grids.
We are particularly committed to the following points for a successful transformation of the energy system:
- Resilient infrastructure: Long-term scenarios should include a broad “demand funnel” in order to realistically depict feasible development paths.
- SES as a common planning basis for the German energy system.
- Regular updates: A review of the SES every two years is essential in order to take account of the latest findings in the network development plans.
- Interlocking with bottom-up approaches: The SES should be more closely aligned with real demand and volume developments, e.g. through market surveys or the regional transformation planning of distribution system operators
The legal anchoring of the SES in the Energy Industry Act forms an important basis for the grid development plans. The task now is to further develop the SES with realistic assumptions and flexible scenarios.
