RHYn Interco
Cross-border transportation of hydrogen
- 100 percent hydrogen transportation
- 75 percent conversion of existing gas pipelines
- from 2029 Connection Freiburg i. B. area
- from 2035 extension to Offenburg/Kehl
RHYn Interco connects France and Baden-Württemberg
Together with the distribution system operator badenovaNETZE and the French gas infrastructure operator NaTran, terranets bw is working on a cross-border transport network for hydrogen: RHYn Interco. By building the necessary hydrogen infrastructure, which is based to the greatest possible extent on the conversion of existing gas pipelines, the project partners will connect the South Baden region in Baden-Württemberg with the Grand Est region in France from 2029.
Step 1: Connection to the Freiburg i. B. area from 2029
The new construction of the connection to France and the conversion of existing gas pipelines will connect major customers of badenovaNETZE near Freiburg i. B.
A new hydrogen pipeline from terranets bw, around 15 kilometers long, will create the connection to France and cross the Rhine between the Fessenheim area on the French side and the Bad Krozingen area on the German side. The new pipeline will be connected to an existing, approximately 20-kilometer-long gas pipeline operated by terranets bw, which runs to March-Buchheim and will be converted to transport hydrogen. Customers will be connected via the badenovaNETZE network in the Freiburg i. B. area.
Step 2: Connection to Offenburg/Kehl from 2035
By converting a further section, the hydrogen network can be extended from Freiburg i. B. to Offenburg and connect additional industrial and mobility customers. An existing 60-kilometer-long gas pipeline from terranets bw can be converted and thus extend the hydrogen network to the Offenburg area. Customers will be connected to the Rhine port in Kehl via a hydrogen pipeline being built by badenovaNETZE.
